Players

On the website the Establishment is always played by the computer. To play against another person, use a chess set at a table: the official rules are the same.

The game

  • How to win: the Sovereign Alliance wins by Liberation, capturing all 16 Establishment pieces. The Establishment wins by Divide and Conquer, capturing all eight Sovereigns of either group.
  • Powers: every Establishment piece has its full chess powers from the very first turn. Sovereigns move like queens, four squares at most. Tap any Establishment piece in a game to see how it moves and what it can capture, and use Show threats to see every square it threatens.
  • Turns: the Sovereigns move first: Southern Sovereigns, White Establishment, Northern Sovereigns, Black Establishment, and again.
  • The Struggle Continues: if 80 turns in a row pass without a capture, the battle ends undecided and nobody is declared the winner.
Computer move speed

How quickly the Establishment's pieces cross the board. It does not change how the computer plays. If your device asks for reduced motion, pieces simply appear.

All sixteen Sovereigns are allies. The dot says where a group began, not whose side it is on. Against them, one computer-controlled Establishment.
